On Friday April 13th I attended and event put on by Chatham's Center for Women's Entrepreneurship. The title for the event was "Managing the Business of a Social Service Non-Profit" and it was by Kathi R. Elliot. LinkedIn Profile: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kathi-elliott-100574109/.
Obviously the focus for this event was on to how to run and manage a business of a social service non-profit. One of the biggest things I took from the event was the fact of how much you really want to help others in order to run a non-profit social service business. In relation to what we have learned in the book we know that a non-profit business does not make money through services. They don't charge for what they do. Social services are created to help people to the best of their ability and they can be quite costly at times. I thought to have a non-profit social services business just seemed crazy.
Kathi's non-profit focused on helping young women work on trying to make a name for themselves and empower them to do their best. In a world where women do not get enough credit and are still treated unequally this non-profit was able to receive a lot of funding in terms of donations and fundraising because it is for and excellent cause that needed attention.
"We defined our base broader in terms of acquiring new donors, and are doing a lot of work on stewarding our existing donors." (WSJ). This quote from the Wall Street Journal is telling how a non-profit continues to make money. The big idea is to be working for a great cause and making sure you are making results so that the donors keep donating.
I never really thought of making a non-profit. I knew it would be a challenge. From the event though I really saw that you can absolutely accomplish anything as long as you work hard and work hard for the right reasons. People will always need help and non-profits are the real heroes. They don't care about the money. They care about people's wellbeing.
